Lists in Twitter make the site twice as useful when you start following a lot of people. Sorting them into lists makes the job of finding really useful information much easier. Simply said, I love the list feature.
Now that I've broken the 1000 mark in people I follow, watching the parade of posts coming in is often useless alone. May people I follow for a specific reason. I have people that post great information on Internet Marketing, blogging, political views, news, sports, Photoshop, Flash amd more. When I decide to follow someone I want to look at why and what category they fit in. Maybe they fit into multiple categories.
Creating new lists on the fly as needed is great and it helps me when I am ready to do some research on a specific topic. Our company uses a great web software system called DotNetNuke. The main authors and experts for it are on Twitter. I can get instant updates and news just by swerving into my DNN list and browsing for 5 minutes. Much faster doing the research can surfing to dozens of blogs and sites.
Why write about something so obvious? Because I talk to people all the time who "just don't get" Twitter, don't see the use. The use for me often isn't in my input, it's in gleaning from the input of others. Lists make that task a lot easier and quicker.
