You Have to Provide Incentives to Succeed

Yesterday our walking hairball of a cat, Scout, was out on the screened porch on my favorite chair doing what he does best, nap. I needed to have him come inside. I stood in the corner of the kitchen and called for him to come in. It was only enough to get him to open his eyes and peek at me. Nothing more. The more I called and the louder I cajoled the less response I got. What passes for his mind was saying, "whatever". Going out to get him would only result in an acrobatic chase around the porch and a light mix of golf language. He's faster and he knows it.

My solution? Offer him the right incentive to come in. I opened the kitchen cabinet, reaching in I grabbed his box of treats and began to shake it. Before I even looked up he was standing right there beside me. Heck, he was running in as soon as he heard the cabinet door open.

Just because I wanted him to do something makes very little impression on him. Cats could not care less about what their owner wants. They have to be incentivized. What's In It For Me?

It's the same with you, me and your online customers. Even if I was pretty or handsome the cat would simply resume his nap. Good looking websites can be just as useless without the right mix of calls to action with incentives.
